    Ryan took the time to speak with me while in Kharkiv, just 30 km (19 miles) from the front line. The city is the second-largest in Ukraine, but has been under nearly constant bombardment for 4 years from indiscriminate Russian rocket, artillery, and drone attacks. Lately, Russia has been targeting energy infrastructure to make life especially miserable for the city's inhabitants, as the January weather regularly dips below -20°C (-4°F). Fortunately, I was able to catch Ryan while the electricity was working.
